Chattanooga's Mental Health Court
Chattanooga's new mental health court launched on July 30, 2015. This long-awaited addition was created to provide additional structure and treatment options to qualified individuals with mental illnesses in hopes of reducing the likelihood of those individuals committing another crime.
Of the inmates housed at the Hamilton County Jail, as many as 40 percent of them are known to have mental illnesses. Once those individuals have served their time, they are released back into society with no additional resources to enable them to do better. As a result, they often return to the criminal justice system time after time. The goal of the new mental health court is to provide those individuals with the resources they need and stop this vicious cycle. This is a great thing for Hamilton County!
