Your Ex-Spouse Can Inherit From You

Image Themed to Content

Did you know it’s possible for your ex-spouse to inherit from you? It is more common than people realize. Here’s a couple of ways that it happens:

💔 If you leave assets to one of your children and that child dies before getting married or having kids of their own. Even if your child has siblings, their remaining living parent (your ex) will inherit what you intended for your child.

💔 You never updated your beneficiary designations.

💔 You tried to update your beneficiary designations after your divorce, but

  • a. the financial institution loses your most recent beneficiary designation form

  • b. you did not properly execute the most recent form or

  • c. your capacity to sign the most recent form comes into question.

This is one of many things that can be prevented with a well planned estate.
